The South East Phillips Commons is one of Minneapolis "most prominent public art projects, with over 93 buildings in the neighborhood, home to a variety of artists, musicians, craftsmen, and artists of all shapes and sizes. In the early 20th century, EastPhillips residents developed a brick warehouse in southern Minneapolis as part of a grandiose project aimed at combating years of pollution in a neighborhood that was one of Minneapolis's most diverse. This clinic serves a traditionally underserved community with an emphasis on mental health services, education, health care and community outreach.
During his presidency of the League of Cities of Minnesota, he promoted the arts as the city's treasured capital. As mayor, he rejuvenated the Rochester Arts Council and helped found the first ever Rochester Art Museum in Rochester, Minnesota, and the Minnesota Museum of Art in Minneapolis.
He was a member of the US Conference of Mayors, served on the boards of the Minnesota Museum of Art and the Rochester Arts Council, and was involved in the founding of Rochester's first public art museum, the Rochester Art Museum. He has served on the board of the American Association of University Art Directors, lectured on art management and marketing at the University of North Dakota, is an associate professor of art history at Minnesota State University - St. Paul, and has been involved in the development of a number of arts education programs for young people in Minnesota.
He has served on numerous boards, including the Minnesota Museum of Art, the Rochester Arts Council, and the American Association of University Art Directors. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Minnesota College of Arts and Humanities and an associate professor of art history at Minnesota State University - St. Paul. He served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2004 to 2006 and as a member of the US Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C., and in a number of other states and local offices in Minnesota from 2006 to 2009.
His charitable activities include honorary membership of the Board of Directors of Minnesota State University - St. Paul, the Minnesota Museum of Art and the Rochester Arts Council.
In 2014, Minnesota began working with schools seeking support and improvement in Minnesota, managed by the Minnesota Department of Education, to help schools promote learning in the arts and bring art to schools.
